We intended to get to Brittany today, not realizing that Mont St Michel is still in Normandy. Anyway, for us it was important to do that 90 degree turn into the peninsula. Tough ask but we were up for it after a good night’s sleep at a very quiet camping at Agon-Coutainville even though Ellie was a bit cold in her thin sleeping bag in spite of wearing my thermal long johns.
For a change we managed to get away quite early after some banter with the caretaker and selected the coastal road. Very very scenic, just like I had imagined Normandy. Quite a few sheep around.
We passed through quite a few small villages, one of these had this impressive ruin.
On and on we cycled, quite a few unexpected steep uphills which we took in our stride, not that it gets easy but we are definitely getting fitter. Touch wood, up to now we have had no problems at all, not even the dreaded travelers gippo guts. Suddenly we crested a hill and a fantastic vista opened up before our eyes, the famous Mont Saint-Michel
Traversing the city of Avranche was quite an adventure, Friday afternoon at rush hour and they built these flippin’ towns on top of hills just to make our lives a misery. Nevertheless with the help of a kind lady at information we found our way out in no time and made an all important stop at Carrefour for supplies again. While waiting for Ellie I got interrogated by a group of youngsters who found this scruffy, bearded individual intriguing. Quite interesting.
We were not sure whether our selected camping would be open and when we overtook a local cyclist I asked him and he went 5 km out of his way to show us, how’s that for helpfulness. It didn’t end there because the owner of the camping happened to be british and he was so happy to be able to talk his lingo that he offered us the use of a caravan free of charge so I am happy to report that I am actually typing this in comfort sitting at a table.
Supper: 4 huge sausages, rice, stir fry.
Distance: 86 km
