Mont St Michel – 14

Saturday, 8 May 2010, day 15

Mr Scrooge in me won the day, I convinced Ellie that it was time to do something “cultural” today, not in the least motivated of course by the thought of another night in the cozy caravan. Not that it meant a lazy day, we still did more than 50 k’s but at least there was no pressure to get to a camping and find our way.

One can’t get to this area and not visit the famous landmark of Mont St Michel, an amazing island in the appropriately named bay of Mont Saint Michel. With the access road it is now more of a peninsula but still it must have been quite an in-impregnable fortress in its day, combination of abbey, church and castle. I was frustrated at not having access to wikipedia to read more about its history.

We wandered all over the place admiring the craftsmanship of old, let the pictures do the talking:

Of course this is a major tourism attraction so we were accompanied by quite a few people. Away from the maddening crowds we found a nice spot for lunch before heading into the wind back to camp and instead of turning into one of the many restaurants advertising pancakes we rode an extra 7 km’s to go buy the ingredients at Carrefour. At least we are now stocked up till Monday and I got some much needed chain oil.

Supper: Pancakes!

Distance: 52 km
