Caen – 10

Tuesday, May 4, 2010

Happy birthday Nick, a bit far away to give you a bear hug, have one on us anyway.

By popular demand I will make the photo’s a little bigger, it is wonderful to read your comments and mail while on the road, or rather while drinking strong coffee at McD.

It was difficult to leave our little shelter from the storm, especially since it had a heater and min temp was 5 degrees during the night. Ellie made good use of the opportunity to wash and dry some undies and things.

It was almost like leaving a snug cave on a hike to brave the elements outside but off we went, on our way to Caen. We had heard there was a nice cathedral and they were right, very impressive.

The rest of Caen wasn’t. Most of it was flattened during the war and they have not done a very good job of rebuilding it. It also didn’t help we were freezing our butts off so soon we were on our way again, me scheming how to convince Ellie to take another cabin for the night but when we arrived at camp we found a lovely sheltered spot behind a tree and had a very comfortable night.

As you can see, not very roomy but very comfortable. There were not many people on the camping and, like everywhere else, about half of them are Dutch. Generally we don’t find them very friendly and tend to avoid them, unlike the locals who are very friendly and easy to talk to. They give me compliments on how good my French is which is a lot of bull of course but nevertheless nice to hear especially when it is a cute girl at reception.
