Turnhout walkabout

Tuesday 14 September 2010

Our tired bicycles resting after everything we put them through.

This morning we go and explore Turnhout, quite windy and chilly. We find the tourism office without problem but we might as well skipped them as they are not very helpful. I manage to pry a folder with a walkabout in it so we follow that. First stop the church on the Grote Markt. There is much to admire in this church, especially the carvings, here’s a detail of the pulpit:

and another of one of the many chapels inside the church:

As we wander through town we can’t escape the feeling that after Gent and Mechelen this place is a bit of a letdown so I concentrate on the various details of the old buildings such as this intricate brickwork:

For lunch we find some shelter from the wind in a small courtyard in the Begijnhof,

after that we return to the bicycles and do a bit of a tour of the surrounding area before returning quite early back to the hut where Ellie still explores a bit of the nature reserve around the camping.
