Grosse Scheidegg

Wednesday, 14 July 2010

The furtherst point covered by our six-day pass was Grosse Scheidegg, a high pass between two valleys so we had to go and see it. First the train to Grindelwald which we could catch with our eyes closed by now and the last bit by bus, you can see why.

The road snaked up and up with just enough room for the bus, at every corner the driver sounded the very melodious hooter to warn cyclists that they had to get out of the way. Quite a challenge to do this pass on a bicycle. On top we bailed out and chatted to an elderly Swiss gentleman who told us what we all had to see in the surrounding area. We didn’t have the heart to tell him that we had seen most of it already.

We then walked a path back down the pass again, many paths to choose from. You can se you don’t have to have an athletic build to enjoy the Alps.

Again we walked in the shadows of some imposing cliffs.

but also some lovely flowers by the side of the path

and also saw that they build mountain huts in some crazy places, I suppose it looks better when there is snow

Making hay is not easy in this country, many places we saw the farmers cutting grass with oversized, self-propelled lawnmowers and then later rake it all together.

Back down in Grindelwald we admired the many window boxes with geraniums, compared to my measly Pelargoniums I have some way to catch up

and last but not least I took a pic of the restaurant from where you can observe the rock climbers tackling the Eiger.
