Day 01 – to Barrydale

2013.08.21

We are off on our adventure, a mixed bag of camping, botanizing and visiting our son Nick. It will take us through mostly the south-western part of the Western Cape if that makes sense.

We have decided that, apart from the first and last day, to only do relatively short distances between campsites so we will have ample time to look around. We will also stay in Cape Town for a week using Nick’s old apartment as a base.

Our first stop will be Barrydale, Su’s (Nick’s partner) parents own a house there and have kindly offered to let us stay there for a few nights.

One of our main objectives is to find as many Pelargoniums in their natural habitat as we can and we already started by the Stormsriver bridge where we found these lovely P.cordifolium

From Knysna onwards we hit a cold front with intermittent rain, this makes for an interesting drive through the Tradouw pass with the wet fynbos looking particularly beautiful and we spot a cave along the road with some P.paplionaceum on the edge of it.

We arrive in Barrydale just in time to collect the key at the estate agent, find the house and happily settle in.
