We consulted the boss at camp and she confirmed it would be a good day to visit Jungfraujoch, also sometimes called the top of Europe as at 3453m is the highest railway station in Europe. The train ride is an experience in itself as you wind your way up the mountain through tunnels in the Eiger and Jungfrau with stops along the way which allow you to peer out through holes in the sheer rockfaces.
First stop on top was the ice sculpture section, a series of tunnels hacked in the ice where various ice sculptures are displayed, rather cold but also quite fun to move around on the ice.
Of course it was much more fun to go outside and walk on the snow and enjoy the sight of the mountain tops all around us, the green valleys below and the gletchers between.
The weather was absolutely perfect and we walked to a mountain hut which gave us a good idea how strenuous walking in the snow on a mountain can be.
We still had some time left in the afternoon when we came back down the mountain so we bailed out at the lower station and walked further down instead where we met these two girls who had the right idea how to spend a hot day in the mountains
I couldn’t stop myself from taking loads of photos of the Eigerwand, I really must read the book again about the first ascent of this daunting rock face.
